About Jessica Larsen
I have been a massage therapist since 2006, specializing in fluid deep tissue, prenatal, and Arvigo Techniques in Mayan Abdominal Massage (Oregon License #23819, NCBTMB CE Provider #1000491). I have also become a little obsessed with Polyvagal Theory, and I am excited to offer a new twist on classes about ethics, communication and boundaries.
Stephen Porges’ work came up in one of my first deep tissue classes with a favorite mentor. I was immediately struck by the inclusion of ‘freeze’ as a stress response, when high school biology left it at ‘fight or flight.’ Dots started to be connected as I began to see my reactions through the lens of the autonomic nervous system. I also saw what a great freezer I can be - not like the appliance with ice cream in it, but more like the possum.
And then I put it to the back of my mind. Until more than a decade later, when I was reeling from a traumatic birth and trying to figure out what was happening to me. This time, finding the work of Peter Levine, Deb Dana, Kimberly Ann Johnson and Laura Geiger, among many others, dots began to be connected again by learning about Polyvagal Theory. I was able to slowly start to feel safe and social more often than not. The more I learned, the more I applied these concepts to my life, my parenting, and my massage practice.
I look forward to sharing theory, tools and techniques to help you see how your nervous system is responding, and how to support yourself to be a present, available and centered massage therapist.
